During our summer virtual recital, we heard tutors and students showcase pieces from The Beatles "Here Comes the Sun" on the guitar to Joe Hisaishi's "Carrying You" through a viola and cello duet. ​Daniel Cho, Community Outreach Coordinator in Maryland, organized a concert at the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, where Ms. Monteith, the coordinator, retired in July. Him and a fellow performer and DRM tutor, Conan Chung, surprised her on her last day by visiting and playing "My Way" to celebrate.

Maryland Community Outreach Coordinator Daniel Cho organized a performance at Lorien Harmony Hall, Columbia, MD. There were 10 performers who played for the senior citizens, including some of Daniel's DRM students as well as DRM students from all over Maryland!

Rei Fukuoka, the Community Outreach Coordinator in New York City, organized an outreach concert in upstate New York for senior members in Sullivan County. The seniors themselves also participated in these performances, playing their own instruments as well.

​One of our community outreach coordinators, Daniel, organized a concert on May 17th at Brightview, Colombia. There were a total of 9 performers! Great work to everyone who performed!

This outreach concert marks the final community outreach concert to 2023! Lucia Noto organized her second concert at Sunrise of McLean. There were six performers, including violinists, a flautist, and a singer.

This is the final concert in Maryland's winter concert series. Daniel Cho and Maryland community outreach performers went to the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center. Unlike the many senior homes they have performed at, Grassroots offers emergency shelter services for those experiencing homelessness and free walk-in counseling. The Maryland group performed for the families staying there temporarily. Watch their performance here!

After performing at Arbor Terrace, the Maryland community outreach group performed at the Bain 50+ Center in Columbia, MD where seniors had their holiday luncheon. Click here to watch them perform!

Daniel Cho organized a series of four concerts over winter break! The Maryland community outreach group started its winter concert series at Arbor Terrace in Fulton, MD. This was their second time visiting and seniors were already waiting for them in the lobby, excited to hear them perform again! Click here to watch their performance.

New York's Community Outreach Coordinator John Wang organized his first concert over Thanksgiving break! Nine musicians performed at the Massry Residence at Daughters of Sarah in Albany, New York. Pieces included the Devienne Nineteen Duets and a string and clarinet quartet rendition of Can't Help Falling in Love.

Howard County students had a 3-hour early dismissal from school on Monday. Daniel Cho, along with other Do Re Mi students, spent their afternoon performing at two different nursing homes: Sunrise of Columbia and Lorien Harmony Hall. Their repertoire included pieces from the Sound of Music, Vivaldi's Winter from the Four Seasons, and Tchaikovsky's March from the Nutcracker.

​​Do Re Mi hosted a violin masterclass featuring Erin Keefe, Concertmaster of the Grammy award-winning Minnesota Orchestra! Ms. Keefe is a graduate of the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music, and now teaches at Curtis as well. Ms. Keefe worked with tutors on Bach and Wieniawski, from phrasing to bow weight. She ended the masterclass with tips on practice motivation and piece memorization!

Do Re Mi saxophone tutor Sean Whelan organized two different outreach concerts in his Andover community—one for the Andover Senior Center and one for his school's National Honor Society induction ceremony. Their performance at the Andover Senior Center featured a really cool duet featuring both voice and the saxophone!

To celebrate the start of summer, Do Re Mi students and tutors gathered for another recital featuring all different kinds of musical performance. Students from Maryland and all the way to Australia showcased their hard work with performances including viola folk songs and even a vocal rendition of "Much More." We also announced the 3rd Accelerando Scholarship Winners!

Panelists Amy Hwang, Stan Lee, Miyabi Henriksen, and Nicholas Suarez discussed their college/conservatory application process and provided Do Re Mi HS tutors with valuable tips. They talked through pursuing meaningful extracurriculars, coming up with a "college list," and not procrastinating on writing essays.

Violinist Karla Donehew Pérez of the Catalyst Quartet gave tutors advice on relaxing the violin form, using gravity and weight for the bow, and improving intonation! In addition to maintaining a busy performance schedule, Ms. Donehew Perez is a faculty member at Bard College and the Sphinx Performance Academy.

Do Re Mi alumni Carys Sutherland, Sasha Hitachi, Rachel Lee, and Joseph St. Jules joined us to share their experience so far at college! They covered time management skills, student life on/off campus, and finding paid gigs or music management opportunities. Watch here!

Three Do Re Mi viola tutors performed and received feedback from Li-Kuo Chang, Principal Viola of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra! Students had an opportunity to ask Mr. Chang questions about his professional career and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he teaches.

Susanne Mentzer, voice instructor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, detailed personal feedback for 3 of our voice tutors. We held a Q&A at the end, where Ms. Mentzer recounted how she landed her first role at the Metropolitan Opera and delivered advice for young classical singers. Watch here!

We invited Danielle Arnold, Assistant Director of Admissions at the Eastman School of Music, to present on the admissions process for music schools! She covered the difference between dual degree and major, networking in college, scheduling lessons with the faculty, and answered tutors' questions about applying. View the PPT here!

3 Do Re Mi flute tutors performed works by Mozart, Chaminade, and Bozza for John Thorne, Associate Professor of Flute at the Northwestern Bienen School of Music! He talked about auditioning at Northwestern and gave our tutors audition tips, and discussed flute embouchure. Watch here!

We invited Albert Hunt (clarinetist and private instructor) and David Matchim (band director and music educator) to present about teaching music and provide insight into the music education career field. They discussed the importance of having a teaching philosophy and aiming for progress more than results. Watch here!

Steven Temme, Assistant Principal of the Marine Band, gave amazing feedback to 4 Do Re Mi tutors! Our tutors performed Demersseman, Creston, and Haendel, and asked Mr. Temme questions about his musical career and how to practice old repertoire. Watch here!

Do Re Mi tutors met YouTuber and comedy musician Daniel Thrasher! We heard from him about his journey on becoming a pianist and content creator, and asked him questions about making videos. He also gave great advice for music students and showed us how he comes up with impromptu songs on the spot!

Do Re Mi tutors played more skrbl.io, shared funny band stories, and caught up with each other through Zoom!

Do Re Mi's MD Volunteers performed a free concert for residents at Sunrise Columbia! Works featured Paganini, Piazzolla, Handel, Horovitz, and Bach. We also got bubble tea afterwards!

Our volunteers performed a second recital after being invited back to Lorien Health Center in Columbia! Residents enjoyed Mozart, Bach, Telemann, and Piazzolla.

Do Re Mi's volunteers met each other, shared laughs, played musical skribbl.io and gartic phone, won free Do Re Mi tote bags, and got to ask our founder questions!

Do Re Mi's students and tutors performed pieces on flute, oboe, violin, piano, percussion, voice, clarinet, and guitar! Each performer will receive a free Do Re Mi tote bag!

Our volunteers spread holiday cheer at our first in-person outreach concert! We played an hour-long program for several residents at Lorien Health Center in Columbia, MD!

Kicking off our new nursing home concert initiative, we sent personalized concerts featuring our volunteers to five nursing homes in Maryland!

Several of our tutors who were selected for Carnegie Hall's National Youth Orchestra met up during the program! We are very proud of our volunteers for their involvement.

Do Re Mi's students and tutors performed in a Virtual "Father's Day" Recital. We heard great performances of pieces from Chopin, to Beethoven, to songs from the hit TV show iCarly! We also announced the winners of our 2021 Accelerando Scholarship Competition Watch here!

Dariusz Skoraczewski, Principal Cellist of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra gave great feedback to 3 of our cello tutors! We also participated in a short Q&A where we talked about Mr. Skoraczewski's favorite performances, how to be a great Principal player, and his advice for younger musicians. Watch here!

We had a wonderful conversation with Sarah Willis MBE, French Horn Player in the Berlin Philharmonic! We talked about connecting with others through music, the importance of a good teacher, how to practice consistently, and what it's like playing in an European orchestra!

3 of our violin tutors performed for Alexandra Osborne of the National Symphony Orchestra and received feedback! Both tutors and students attended, and we had a fun and insightful Q&A session at the end. ​Watch here!

Tutors joined two professional musicians (Leah Barrick of the National Symphony and Brent Flinchbaugh of Maryland Trumpet Institute) in a discussion about teaching online, strategies for teaching, and the rewards of teaching.
